The Local Area

The hamlet of Bwlch y Sarnau is in the parish of Abbey-Cwm-Hir in the Old Radnorshire County of Powys. It is located on the Glyndwrs Way midway between the coast and the border with England. It is centrally placed between the north and south of Wales.

The hamlet is situated at over 1300 feet in the Cambrian Moutains with stunning views in all seasons. People are drawn to the peace and beauty of the area. It is a haven for wildlife and a popular nesting spot for red kites, buzzards, owls and bats.

Bwlch Y Sarnau is 5 miles from the Gilfach nature reserve. A 400 acre traditional hill farm and SSSI where otters, weasles, stoats, polecats, water voles and bats can be found.

Bwlch Y Sarnau is also only 10 miles from the historic landscape of the Elan Valley one of the most important sites for wildlife in Wales.


The hamlet is 8 miles ( approx 12 minute drive ) to Rhayader where your can find shops, GP and Dental surgeries. Also cafes, pubs, restaurants, galleries, leisure centre with pool and museum. The market town of Llanidloes is 9 miles away. A Tesco and Aldi can be found at Llandrindod Wells 12 miles away (about 20 mins drive)

The nearest railway station is Pen y bont 7 miles away. Newtown station is 12 miles or 30 mins drive with fast trains to Birmingham and London.

Community Centre

The Community Centre is the central meeting point for the residents and visitors to Bwlch Y Sarnau. The centre is located in the old village school which was closed in 1990. The community pulled together to raise funds to renovate the building and add a new kitchen and toilets.
Regular Clubs at the Centre

Art Classes  every Tuesday 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm

Gardening Club – monthly talks and visits to local gardens with a party at Christmas.

WI – 1st Tuesday of the month 7.15pm til late !

Busy Bookworms Book Club , every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm

Camera Club meets 1st and 3rd Thursdays 7pm – 9pm . Workshops and Field trips.

Mobile Library Coffee Morning meets the 2nd Friday of each month 11.00 am to 12.00. The library bus visits 11.30 am to 12.00

The centre is also the venue for quiz nights , coffee mornings , parties etc throughout the year.

The centre can be hired for £7.50 for a 2 hour session or £25 for the day. Please email to book

Camera Club


A small group of amateur photographers of varying skill and experience meet twice a month at the community centre.

Visit the club’s web site to view galleries, gather further information on the club’s activities, and to find out how you can become involved.

Members meet up at 7.00pm on the first and third Thursdays of each month.
